71 Plein air or painting in the studio? What's the difference?
Many artists swear by plein air painting; in open air, outdoor. I do that regurarly in summertime. It brings me quick and simple solutions. It asks another approach.
In this video I start with a quick watercolorsketch at Kneuterdijk, 5 min from my studio in The Hague. The next day I will be working on a larger watercolor inside the studio of the Departement van Justitie, in The Hague as well.
Details about my lecture in Holland together with Zach Sprowls 30th of May can be find here www.titusmeeuws.com/lectures-lezingen/

70 The extraordinary in the ordinary
Переглядів 3,8 тис.День тому
I remember the annoying visits at museums when I was a child. Standing in a row, waiting to get a glimpse of something everybody must see. There is a universal beauty, we all like. But artists find beauty in almost everything, they don't have to look for it. These weeks I'm working on a small series of Amsterdam. I am painting a different part than I do usually. Less known, but more interesting...
69 RISKING FAILURE

Of course I want the painting to succeed. But I can always start again, paper isn't that expensive. In this demonstration I show that I always try to be honest to what I see and HOW I look. It means that I have to work in a hurry here and there, I compare it to signing a signature. There are many rules for finding a good composition. But what is a composition and what's perfect? In my opinion it's more important to rely on a feeling. You feel it's right. 66 PAINTING THE LIGHT (by painting the dark)
Переглядів 7 тис.Місяць тому
In this watercolor demo you will see how to put some bright reflections over the dark parts as soon as the darkness brings balance in the painting. As I think about how to paint light effects I have to admit that it's not about how to paint the light, but more about how to paint the darkness. I’m currently reading The Creative Act and remember your commentary on it. Today you commented on what you like and the difference you see in plein air and studio work; and I’m glad you might not give up on your recent plein air piece. I hope we get to see the challenge that might present, even if in your eyes it fails. I’m also glad you explained the blurriness which was purposeful and its contribution to your painting.

Taking a risk and adding a comment before watching the video past you setting up. :D I would think painting outside would be more difficult due to the changing light, movement of people, vehicles, etc. and general distractions. Now on to the video!

Love your work have been watching for quite some time. The nagging question I had though this is not a criticism, just an observation. How on Earth do you find anything in your studio? It's like you need an assistant to help clean up. I know you're really busy. I suspect that's really the reason. What are your thoughts on how organized a studio needs to be?

I have framed many watercolors without glass in fact many watercolorists are doing it now, you spray it first like what you got then brush acrylic varnish on it. I like to mount it to a board first such as birch plywood or gator board. Some artist just brush the acrylic varnish on without the spray. They say as long as it's good and dry, use a soft brush in it will be ok.

The tree you painted in the opening segment was perfect. Watching you paint the leaves and white highlights filled me with so much happiness. It’s things like this that make me keep returning for more techniques, insights to your process as well as your thoughts on why you love being an artist. Your line from another recent video was, “I [enjoy]…finding the extraordinary in the ordinary,” really hit home with me. It’s the reason why Andrew Wyeth has always been my all-time favorite artist. The details and the play of light and earth tones in his watercolors and tempera paintings of Maine and Pennsylvania literally give me goosebumps. Thanks for all the effort and love you obviously put into making your wonderful videos. Sincerely.

As always it's amazing to see how you master the water and paint. But what i find most amazing is how consistent the quality of your artwork is, how calm you always seem te be. The state of mind you have, the focus and patience. Of all things i admire most your mental stability and discipline. I paint a lot yet there are days am incapable of finding that calmness. Apart from a lack of education (am an amateur with no artschool) its mostly a lack of inner peace that bothers me. I can feel insecure at times, or distracted or just not calm enough. And painting while someone is watching, i can't. Your video's do feel like a meditation, it's very calming. And how beautiful you paint some of my favorite streets in amsterdam. Thank you.

As always, I enjoy watching you paint and hearing what you have to say about the painting. Aside from your sessions where you paint portraits of other artists with them, you seem to work in isolation. Do you belong to any watercolor organizations? Do you go plein air painting with other artists as part of a group? Do you have friends who are watercolor painters? Do you do shows with other painters? I hope you don’t mind these questions.
